From the Guardian list I rather liked:
The Tusk That Did the Damage — Tania James
Like a Mule Bringing Ice Cream to the Sun — Sarah Ladipo Manyika
Golden Hill — Francis Spufford
From the Refinery 29 List:
Cauliflower — Nicola Barker
A Hundred Thousand Worlds — Bob Proehl
Unrelated to either list, my eye was drawn towards:
The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu: And Their Race to Save the World's Most Precious Manuscripts — Joshua Hammer
The Devoursers — Indra Das
From the Guardian last, I vote for Known and Strange Things by Teju Cole. I would read The Tusk. Having just read about Shakespeare, we could go for Atwood's Hag-Seed. I'm curious about What Belongs to You: "a novel that finds the poetry and beauty in cruising lavatories for sex."
ReplyDeleteIt seems everyone recommends Zadie Smith's Swing Time. I'm also seeing lots of recs for The Good Immigrant, and At the Existentialist Cafe.
I've been meaning to read When Breath Becomes Air.
From the Refinery list: Do Not Say We Have Nothing, Please Enjoy Your Happiness, You Are Having a Good Time, The Vegetarian.
The Cauliflower sounds fantastic.
Leah Bloom I could go for that. Do you want to keep looking? We've got a bit of time yet.
ReplyDeleteTime for what? I'm in no hurry, but also willing to start as soon as I can get a paper copy of whatever we choose. I'm about to start My Name is Lucy Barton on my own, though happy for readers-along too.
ReplyDeleteLeah Bloom When did you want to kick things off? I think last year we did this so we'd have stuff to talk about at parties (either New Year parties or Arisia parties).
ReplyDeleteI keep hearing great things about the devourers
ReplyDeleteBlue Gargantua, let's pick a book now and kick off next week - we can always read more more together later!
ReplyDeleteFor something political we could read Cleve Jones's new book, When We Rise: My Life in the Movement.
