So, page one, they blow up the moon. Now there's a shotgun program to evacuate enough people/stuff into space to survive the impending apocalypse and somehow propagate humanity. Lots of fairly hard science on display, but the personal/emotional plots also get their fair share of time.
Blue Gargantua If you mean Doc in my head he's Neil deGrasse Tyson. ;-) There's also the Elon Musk/Jeff Bezos hybrid who does his own thing.
I'm about 85% done according to my Kindle. The first part was pretty intense. HUGE SHIT HAPPENS - and that's just the setup for the rest of the story. The actual blowing up of the moon is practically a throw away, it is just the first domino to fall to trigger the rest.
What sort of awesome? I think off and on I should read more Stephenson (more than Snow Crash and Diamond Age).
